Steamed Pumpkin

Steamed pumpkin is an extremely simple homemade dessert or staple. It preserves the pumpkin’s natural sweetness and nutrients to the greatest extent, with a soft and tender texture. It is a good choice for a healthy diet. Generally, beginners only need 15-20 minutes to complete it (mainly the steaming time).

Ingredients and Tools

  • Pumpkin
  • Steamer

Measurements

  • Pumpkin 300 g
  • Drinking water 1000 ml (for the steamer)

Steps

  • Wash the pumpkin skin clean, remove the pulp and seeds.
  • Cut the pumpkin into slices about 2 cm thick, set aside.
  • Add 1000 ml drinking water to the steamer pot.
  • Arrange the sliced pumpkin evenly on a plate.
  • When the water in the steamer comes to a boil, place the plate with pumpkin into the steamer.
  • Cover with the lid and steam over high heat for 15-20 minutes, until the pumpkin is soft and can be easily pierced with chopsticks.
  • Turn off the heat and carefully remove the plate.

Notes

  • Different pumpkin varieties vary in sweetness and texture. Older pumpkins are usually sweeter and more starchy.
  • Pumpkin skin contains nutrients. If you like, you can steam it unpeeled, but it needs to be thoroughly washed.
  • The steaming time depends on the size and thickness of the pumpkin pieces, as well as the pumpkin variety. Testing with chopsticks is a good way to tell if it is done steaming. If you follow the process in this guide and find issues or improvements, please submit an Issue or Pull request.
