Frozen Wontons

Wontons are a traditional Chinese folk noodle dish. Dumplings evolved from them, and they feature thin wrappers, tender filling, and a clear, fresh-tasting broth.

Ingredients and Tools

  • One bag of frozen wontons that is not expired (better if it comes with seasoning packets)
  • Rice cooker (recommended brand: Xiaomi Smart Rice Cooker)
  • Salt (when the frozen wontons do not include seasoning packets)
  • Chicken bouillon (when the frozen wontons do not include seasoning packets)
  • Ground white pepper (when the frozen wontons do not include seasoning packets)
  • Sesame oil (when the frozen wontons do not include seasoning packets)
  • 1 sprig cilantro (optional) > Note: Different cooking tools may require different methods for frozen wontons; this only introduces the method using a “rice cooker.”

Measurements

  • Generally, one person can eat 12~20 wontons in one meal
  • When all wontons are placed in the rice cooker, use 2~3 times the amount of water that just covers all the wontons (for a one-person serving, about 600ml of water is needed)

Steps

  • Pour water into the rice cooker, run the stew or cook mode for 35 minutes. At this point, opening the rice cooker should show the water boiling. Add the wontons.
  • Carefully put the frozen wontons into the water, and avoid scalding yourself.
  • Before putting them into the rice cooker, you may briefly rinse them with water.
  • If the wontons include seasoning packets, add them to the water at this time. Cook the wontons.
  • Cover the rice cooker and run the same stew or cook mode for 20 minutes. Serve the wontons.
  • Ladle all the wontons along with enough water to cover them into a bowl.
  • If you did not add a seasoning packet earlier, season to taste with salt, chicken bouillon, ground white pepper, and sesame oil.
  • You can also sprinkle 5~8 cilantro leaves for flavor (only for those who are not sensitive to the taste of cilantro).

Notes

  • After it’s cooked, you can also add a boiled poached egg (sunny-side egg) and eat them together. If you follow this guide’s process and find any problems or improvements, please submit an Issue or Pull request.
